The pregnancy diary: week 15

I’m still a little behind in posting these updates, but I’m catching up quickly! As I write this I’m nearly 20 weeks.

I had in my mind that when I hit the end of the first trimester that all the problems would go away. They would be replaced by this amazing halo of goodness, and I would suddenly look like a princess.

Spoiler alert – that doesn’t happen.

The fatigue is going away

This is a win for me. I’m starting to get back into the normal energy range. Fitness wise I’ve lost a lot of my fitness already, which I expected given I wasn’t out there smashing the pavement every morning or doing strength classes. Most mornings Ness and I are out trying to do things, whether it’s swimming or walking. I’m still active, I just don’t have any strength.

I’m thrilled I can make it through the day without desperately needing a midday nap. Work wise, I’m needed back in the office so it’s not like naps are an option. I’ve got some major outstanding work that needs to get some traction happening, so I’m glad the fatigue has gone.

Food that makes me want to puke

I want to eat better now I’m over the first hurdle, but it’s hard. Mario and I find the list growing daily of things that just make me feel sick, or just a single whiff and I’m running away.

They are:

  • The smell of Thai food (one of the first hints that I was pregnant was when I walked past the local food market stall and nearly gagged)
  • Broccoli (Mario made some one night when I wanted meat and veg, I had one bite and it all nearly came back up. The next night he made some for himself, and I went running to the bedroom to lay down from just the smell. This one is an extreme reaction).
  • Butter chicken
  • Balsamic vinegar (if used as a dressing; if it’s put on avocado on toast it makes it all taste like mushy bacon)
  • The smell of pork anything
  • The smell of beef anything
  • Steak
  • Sweet potato (devastated over this one)
  • Sausages unless they’re chicken (we tried a range in preparation for going camping, I didn’t puke but they tasted horrible)
  • Citrus juice used as salad dressing
  • Any salad dressing tastes horrible

For people that used to be meat and veg kinda people at night, this has been extremely tough to get used to.

Foods that feed me

This is the list of things that currently sit well with me. So far there has been no reaction – smell or taste.

  • Carbs – breads, pasta etc
  • Lollies (not great though)
  • Ice cream (this has saved me a couple of times with heart burn)
  • Watermelon – could eat an entire one each day easily
  • Other fruits
  • Cucumber
  • Green beans (they taste so good now)
  • Mince (no chance with any other forms of beef, my assumption unless masked in flavour by other ingredients – probably why sausage rolls and meat pies make this list)
  • Dairy
  • Some salad items – lettuce, tomato, carrot, celery

As you can see, it’s super easy to blow out on calories with that list.

Physical appearance

Right now I’m in that phase of just looking quite bloated. Taking a photo in my singlet you can’t really see much in the way of my belly, as you can see in my image above. My thighs are already growing, and the clothes are snug. Too snug. It’s starting to play with my mind…

Yet I know, I know….temporary right? I freaking hate hearing that line.
