Hoping for some wins

I’m hoping for some big wins this week!

Feeding to sleep

I’m going to put my hand up and admit that I got Luca and myself into some bad habits. As a first time mum, I’ve had no idea what I was doing, just winging it (which I’ve been told is what every mum does). Coming out the tail end of the first 6 months (Luca letter pending) I can say that I’ve learned some lessons that I won’t repeat should we decide on a second child.

Regarding naps, I looked for the easy way out when it came to getting Luca down for a sleep. He settled so easily when he was comfort sucking on the boob, so we went with that.

Now at 6 months, I’m trying to break the habit and it’s hard.

There are a few reasons I’m trying to break the habit, mainly making it easier for him to go to sleep. Right now he either has to rely on me, or being walked to sleep. It puts pressure on me to be there, or difficult for the person trying to walk him to sleep (he’s getting heavy).

When we’re out and about it’s getting extremely difficult for him to fall asleep in the pram or the car. It’s embarrassing and awkward when he cries so loudly. Getting a reward for crying is not something I want to encourage in the future!

Going through this process is not easy.

For those that don’t have children it’s hard for them to understand. It’s not as simple as just letting them cry, or me physically leaving the room. That’s traumatic for the child, and no one wants that to happen. It has to be introduced gently so the bub understands what’s going on – change the feed to sleep associations for something else like comforters, or sounds etc.

There’s bazillions of sites with information on the web, so I won’t go into it here.

What we’re doing is following a program for both sleep and breaking the association, and for the next fortnight I’m expecting it to be hell. On the bright side, Luca did manage to sleep last night from 7pm – 1.45am. That may have been that he was tired from swimming class yesterday, or it may have been as a result of his first day following the program. Either way, I was thrilled!

We haven’t chosen the best week to start as we’re flying to Townsville for my cousin’s wedding later this week. But to be honest, there’s never going to be a good week. We’ll always have something happening. So I decided now was as good a time as any. We’ll do our best to continue to follow the program while we’re away though, and hope that we have some good wins. I’ll be sure to share my experience after we’ve given it a good crack.

Getting frocked up

Speaking of the wedding, I’ve bought a new dress for it. I’m still heavier than I want to be, but that doesn’t mean I can’t look good.

I went shopping and bought a dress that’s flattering for my shape right now instead of trying to squish into something. What I bought I’m quite happy with! No spoilers here right now, but I’ll be sure to post a picture when I’m all dressed up. My mother and I are even visiting a hair dresser that morning to get our hair done.

I’m hoping that with a nice dress, some make up and my hair done that I’m going to get some long-awaited confidence. I’m really looking forward to a night out with my hubby, with bub inside at the hotel being babysat by a good friend of ours.

Parents gone wild!

Like….a single glass of wine wild. WOO!

Last “free” day before going back to work part time

Today is my last “free” day before I go back to work part time. In other words, Luca is in daycare for the day (as part of the “easing him in” process), and I have the day to myself.

I have so much I want to get done!

  • Blogging (hey-o, that’s what I’m doing now! It’s so hard to find time to write these days)
  • Vacuum my car
  • Dusting
  • Vacuuming
  • Mopping
  • Straighten my hair
  • Go for a run at the beach
  • Deep clean the bedroom and our cupboard
  • Visit to the vet for my dog’s arthritis shots
  • Organising Luca’s upcoming baptism
  • Work for a couple of hours this afternoon
  • Grocery shopping

So much to be done! I’ve already achieved a little bit this morning that’s not on the list – a couple of loads of washing, cleaning the kitchen etc.

I thought about spending some time doing stuff for “me”, but then I realised that a lot of this stuff are things I’ve wanted to do for ages but struggle to get time. Or in the case of a run, the things I never get to do anymore and is very much a me thing. I used to run every morning at the beach, and now that’s virtually impossible.

The run will be my reward for getting everything else done, so I guess better get cracking on it!

I hope you’re all having a great day!

  1. Can’t wait to see what you wear!
I’m glad you’re finding something that works to you with sleep, but just so you know, feeding to sleep isn’t a bad habit!
Making babes sleepy is one of the many benefits of breastmilk (including being a comfort, and providing nutrition).
Please don’t feel like you’ve made a mistake, or taken the easy way out! Re-birthing a new self (a mama self!) for your child is hard work, and you’re doing an amazing job at it!
I’m sure you’ll do a great job weaning him off feeding to sleep – follow your gut, and fit those sweet sleepy cuddles into another part of your day. 🙂 You got this!
