Here comes Santa Clause…

I can’t believe Christmas is nearly here! Most years we don’t normally fuss that much, we put up a tree and that’s about it. Since having Luca we’ve done the Santa photo thing, but as he gets older I’m working on embracing it more.

This year I’m upping the ante again.

  • Elf on a shelf
  • Lawn ornaments
  • Making Christmas decorations
  • Advent calendar

Elfing about

Ethan The Cheeky Elf - ALDI Australia

I bought the Aldi version of the elf, since I couldn’t justify spending $55 on “the real thing”. I mean ultimately it’s just a toy that we’re going to be posing around the house. I’ve been looking at pinterest, googling etc. Next on the to-do list is to write myself a schedule (my Project Manager roots are showing).

My husband’s response when I suggested getting the elf was that it would be either “buried or burned”. Can you feel the Christmas spirit? Have any of you ever done the elf thing?

Earlier this year we used flour to make some Easter Bunny “footprints” and Luca was so excited. I can’t wait to see his reaction when he sees the elf. He’s already been telling me that we have to leave milk and cookies out for santa and carrots for the reindeers!

House Decorations

The lawn ornaments we bought on Boxing Day last year, when it had all been discounted to almost nothing. They’re all solar powered, which makes it easy to place them around the yard, although we’ve put them up on garden beds so they won’t get in the way when mowing the lawn.

So far we have:

  • A big red bauble
  • 3 x red pointy tree things
  • 4 x swirly Christmas trees
  • 3 x light up faces (Santa, Snowman and a Reindeer, although the Reindeer doesn’t seem to light up anymore, I think we broke it yesterday)

It’s nothing much yet, but I’d love to just keep adding to the collection little-by-little.

I’m super excited about trying to make Christmas decorations this year! I have grand plans of doing some craft workshops with my little guy, painting and making lots of random stuff. We’re hosting the family over this year as well, so I want to make sure the house looks nice and festive.

Ok, time to go and get started on my first project!

How are you planning on getting into the festive spirit this year?

  1. I’ve been in the mood for Christmas all month. I am never in the mood that early, but this year feels (and is) different. We even got our tree yesterday, although it’s not decorated, but it is the earliest we’ve ever gotten it before. If I had a fake one I probably would have put it up a few weeks ago.

I started Elf on the Shelf with Maddox when he was probably close to Luca’s age. He loves it (even now at 9). The original one comes with a book that explains why the elf is here, and gives you a spot to name your elf. My Mom had some really old elves (probably from the 80s) and Maddox now looks for them too, although they don’t move (he says it’s because someone touched them, which is explained in the book that you can’t touch the elf because he’ll [or she] will lose his magic).

Also, it was so weird to read that you put your inflatables in the garden so that you can mow. It’s so strange to think of Christmas in the summer. Do you have Christmas songs that reference summer stuff? (Like here we have White Christmas, but you would never have a white Christmas.) 🙂

    • Ooh! The elf on the shelf we brought came with a book and “adoption certificate” too! I’m hanging out to open it, but I’m assuming I should be waiting for Luca to be there right? Actually…no, because it can’t be touched I’d need to open it and have it set up showing him. Time to break out the calendar and start planning all the different scenes for each day.

We have a few random Christmas things that are aussie-based, I’ll have to do a blog post on them! There’s some hilarious christmas carols and things, and lots of photos of Santa wearing boardies etc.

So glad you’re feeling the Christmas spirit already! Maybe because this year has just been so crappy we’re all looking for that good thing? Merry Christmas!
