2021 52-in-52 review

Wow what a difference 24 hours makes. Last night I was laying in bed feeling sick with anxiety (generally overwhelmed), but after going to bed at a reasonable hour and waking up and going for a run first thing, today just felt so much more manageable. I’m so glad to be sitting here much more chilled out!

It’s the second last day of the year, and I’m certainly not going to be getting any more 52’s done, so it’s time to review them! For the full list click here, otherwise everything I was able to achieve is listed below.

Spoiler alert – I achieved 50% of the list (26 items).

Activities

  • Go for a walk in a national park
  • Reinstate the date night once a month with my husband (we started it, we weren’t always successful every month)
  • Have a family weekend away
  • Complete a jigsaw puzzle
  • Buy new indoor plants (I was gifted them, but it still counts – end goal of getting more indoor plants achieved!)
  • Learn to reward myself with a non-food-related treat

We did a lot of camping this year, which I’m so grateful for. The caravan was one of our best purchases, and every time my son yells “let’s go camping!” he’s always got my vote!

Health

  • Get back to a regular sleep schedule (I started out strongly with this during the year, but I started slipping towards the end of the year, which coincided with my anxiety rising – no surprises there)
  • Set a running goal – in amongst several running events I was doing with friends, I also set myself a goal to run 2021km during 2021, and I smashed it out of the park!
  • Get back to regularly drinking 2L of water
  • Get a massage
  • Start taking a daily multi-vitamin
My Conqueror 2021km in 2021 medal (image taken from a video I sent to a friend attempting to motivate her to get the remaining miles she needed for the same goal)

Hobby

  • Complete 12 craft projects (pretty sure I’ve completed about a million)
  • Implement a running plan
  • Implement a strength building plan (I worked on this with my trainer, but unfortunately the consistency wasn’t there and I dropped it soon after)
  • Complete a DIY project and learn a new skill

Mental Health

Boy – wasn’t this a doozy! Hands down this was the most successful category of the year.

  • Be honest to someone about how they make me feel
  • Create a gratitude journal
  • Buy a full length mirror
  • Take a full length photo regularly
  • Follow a meditation program
  • Find a technique for dealing with stress
  • Schedule 1hr of self-care each week
  • Learn and track my stress indicators
  • Wear something that makes me feel good

Professional

  • Get a referral from my doctor to see a therapist
  • Find a therapist I like
  • Visit the dentist
  • Get a skin check

I am so grateful that I found a therapist that I love and adore. She understood my humour, she told me when to cut out the bullshit, and she was easy to talk to. My doctor couldn’t have recommended anyone more perfect.

I’m pissed at myself that I still haven’t gone to get a breast check up. I just keep forgetting about it! It’s still on the to do list, I don’t think it’s going to be on the 52 list next year though. I should do this regardless – it doesn’t have to be an item list. The reason I bring this up? REMINDER TO GET YOUR BOOBS CHECKED LADIES!

All up I feel like I achieved a lot this year! It was the “year of health”, which I definitely achieved. Next year I’m going back to basics and including a ton of random things. I just want to remove the pressure a bit, which also means less “every month” or “every day” tasks. I want to go with the flow a bit more next year, and I’m really looking forward to it!

Bring on 2022 – I don’t want to jinx anything, but my spidey senses are tingling in a good way!

Let me know your thoughts!
