Backyard renovations: before and after

backyard renovation

The backyard is finished!! Wahoo! Well, phase 1 anyway. Like my friend, Bel, said, you’re never really finished.

Check out the changes:

When we moved in we had a sloping yard with only one little bit of flat area. We had a period of super heavy rain earlier this year, and that flat area turned into a stagnant creek with bad drainage and gluggy clay. The garden consisted of a weird, jutting out ledge area with loads of random objects mixed in with weeds. At the top, just behind me out of sight in this photo, was something that we could only assume was a dodgy chin up bar, clothes line or old swing set (we have no idea). [...]  read more

Backyard dust bowl

When we moved into our house we always knew we would be redoing the backyard at some point. There were a few things that bothered us. Mostly, that it was on a slant with only a small amount of flat, usable ground. There was a random garden that jutted out of the middle of it as well. When we started pulling out the weeds that were there when we first moved in, we found so many random things in there – bird baths, lights etc. It was completely neglected.

In order to get it under control we knew there would have to be some major work. There would be excavators, and a lot of hard work. [...]  read more

Home office makeover: part 1

I’ve been a bit slack in posting photos of our new house now that we’re moved in. Truth is, I imagined in my mind posting this beautiful interior design magazine-esque image for each room. It was an entirely unrealistic vision. The reality is that we are saving,  picking a room, and slowly doing the bits and pieces. The study/home office makeover part 1 was the first to begin.

When we first bought the house this room was probably one of the best of the bunch. We think the previous owners must have used this for a fourth bedroom, but for us it wasn’t necessary. [...]  read more

Moving in and unpacking

I have been writing all of these updates from my phone, and so my updates are lacking in detail. We have the internet set up at home now though, so very soon I will actually crack open the laptop and write in a worthy update with pictures. But in a nutshell, we have moved in and we are in the process of unpacking!

It’s been such a huge process. We are so blessed to have such wonderful families and friends. It’s incredible to think that in just over a few weeks this place has been almost completely gutted and rebuilt. I can’t wait to share proper photos with you as soon as everything has been put away, but right now it’s a bit of a box town. We are starting to make some serious dents in it though, and as we speak Mario is in the garage packing away all the camping gear.  [...]  read more

Latest update on the renovations

The renovation project for the new house is absolutely cranking along! Thanks to Mario and his family, things are moving pretty quickly, and it’s starting to look a lot better.

Completed since the last update:

  • The floor tiles were removed by some tradies (screw doing that ourselves)
  • Patched all of the walls ready for painting
  • Removed all the old lighting
  • Patched the old ceiling holes and cut out new ones
  • Inserted the new lights
  • Painted the ceiling
  • Begun painting the rest of the house
  • Got quotes for new carpet
  • Trees from the outside were cut down
  • Removed all the rubbish from the lawn work
  • Built a new extension to the wall in the main living area

Room preparation

I actually know zero about painting and pre work. When I was younger, my ex and I tried to paint a room and the work we did was beyond terrible. It was back in the day where a feature wall was all the rage, especially in the blue colour we’d selected. My “favourite” feature (note the sarcasm) was the particularly crooked wall where the blue met the cream. It looked terrible[...]  read more
